Building the Network

The MBI and its partners are investing in, supporting and facilitating the new infrastructure needed to bring affordable, high-speed broadband to underserved areas across the Commonwealth.

Believe it or not there are still some areas of the Commonwealth that do not have access to high-speed internet. Instead the only way they can access the internet is to use dial-up technology. This is because these areas do not have the physical infrastructure that is needed to access high-speed internet. As a result, MBI is focused on building the physical infrastructure that makes it possible to deliver broadband services.

As the Federal Communications Commission explained: "Broadband is the great infrastructure challenge of the early 21st century. Like electricity a century ago, broadband is a foundation for economic growth, job creation, global competitiveness and a better way of life."

The MBI’s investments center around the new MassBroadband 123 network currently being deployed in the western and central regions of the Commonwealth, but also includes support for communities, organizations and providers statewide.

The MBI has also provided grants, technical support and built collaborations all designed to leverage the deployment of new networks and improve broadband access in Massachusetts.
