The MBI Timeline

  • Feb 18, 2014  - MBI announced that MassBroadband 123 construction is complete, tested and turned over to the network operator Axia NGNetworks USA (Axia).
  • Dec 5, 2013 - Governor Deval Patrick announced $10 million pledge towards a swifter solution to one of its major hurdles: delivering high-speed broadband connections to the homes of people in the state's 45 most unserved and underserved communities. Nineteen of those communities are located in Berkshire County.  The $10 million, which the governor announced as part of his new fiscal 2014 capital plan, will be invested into the Last Mile portion of the project, which expands the fiber optic network to individual homes and small businesses.
  • June 14, 2013 – OpenCape launched network.  The MBI provided OpenCape with $5 million in state matching funds to help construct a comprehensive middle mile communications network to expand broadband access throughout Cape Cod, the Islands and the South Coast.
  • April 4, 2013 – MBI held a MassBroadband 123 network launch event at the Farmington River Regional Elementary School in Otis, MA. Governor Deval Patrick lit the first section of a new 1,200-mile fiber-optic network that will bring high-speed Internet access to underserved areas of western and central Massachusetts.
  • January 7, 2012 - MBI and Dorchester Bay Economic Development Corporation announced that 12 small businesses will receive grant funding to help incorporate technology into their businesses and technical support to teach them how best to use the technology.
  • January 2, 2013 - MBI provides $150K in grant funding to Pittsfield Economic Revitalization Corporation (PERC) that will be used to encourage small businesses in Berkshire County to increase their use of the Internet.
  • Sep 13, 2012 – MBI named the Community Broadband Organization of the Year by the National Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors (NATOA)
  • May 25, 2012 – MBI and the Patrick Administration launched www.MassVetsAdvisor.org – a cutting edge we portal that offers enhanced access to benefits for veterans in the Commonwealth
  • Apr 11, 2012 – MBI Awards 4 Community Development Corporations (Dorchester Bay EDC, Pittsfield Economic Revitalization Corp, Quabog Valley CDC, and Community Economic Development Center of Southeastern MA) grants to provide technical assistance to small businesses
  • Jan 04, 2012 – MBI announces agreement with Lightower Fiber Networks
  • Jul 26, 2011 – Governor Patrick kicks off construction of MassBroadband 123 network – One of nation's largest broadband expansion projects
  • Feb 28, 2011 – MBI announces agreement with Network Operator
  • Feb 17, 2011 – First-Ever U.S. National Broadband Map released - includes data developed by the MBI
  • Oct 28, 2010 – Use of state fire towers to expand broadband access in western Massachusetts
  • Oct 01, 2010 – MBI receives $4.1 million in stimulus funds for broadband assistance
  • Jul 02, 2010 – MBI Awarded $45.4 million in federal stimulus funds to expand broadband access
  • Mar 16, 2010 – FCC Unveils National Broadband Plan
  • Mar 12, 2010 – Governor Patrick Celebrates $32 Million in Federal Funding for Broadband for OpenCape
  • Nov 06, 2009 – Governor Patrick announces $2M in federal broadband mapping funds to aid in the development of affordable, reliable broadband Internet services for all communities in the Commonwealth
  • Jul 28, 2009 – Governor Deval Patrick announces news that the MBI's $4.3 million, 55 mile fiber along Interstate 91 is deployed in partnership with MassHighway
  • Mar 24, 2009 – First meeting of the full MBI board, including four gubernatorial appointments. Apr 24 2009 - Governor Patrick files legislative proposal “An Act Relating to Economic Recovery Through Broadband Initiatives in Massachusetts” with the Legislature to enable the Commonwealth to take full advantage of Recovery Act funding for broadband deployment initiatives
  • Feb 17, 2009 –The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (“ARRA”), which appropriates $7.2 billion to promote high-speed Internet, or broadband, is signed into law
  • Oct 03, 2008 – First meeting of MBI board (ex officio directors only)
  • Aug 02, 2008 – $40 million Broadband Act signed into law signed by Governor Patrick in Goshen, MA
  • Feb 01, 2007 – Under the leadership of EOHED, the Broadband initiative created in close consultation with John Adams Innovation Institute and other stakeholders.
