MBI and Baker-Polito Administration Approve Proposal by Charter Communications to Close Last Mile Coverage Gaps in Six Towns

WESTBOROUGH - The Massachusetts Broadband Institute (MBI) has officially qualified the proposal recently submitted by Charter Communications, to provide Last Mile broadband solutions to the towns of Egremont, Hancock, Monterey, New Salem, Princeton, and Shutesbury. Charter proposed wiring the six unserved towns, in response to the MBI’s recent RFP for Last Mile Grants to Provide Broadband Service to Unserved Towns in Western Massachusetts. The MBI has agreed, following negotiations with Charter to determine the firm’s best and final offer, to cover 100 percent of the public cost outlined in Charter’s proposal.

The grant funding, approved today by the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Broadband Institute at MassTech (MBI), is part of the administration’s continued commitment to ensuring broadband access to over 40 Last Mile towns in Massachusetts unserved by broadband internet access.

The request for proposals, issued by the Massachusetts Broadband Institute at MassTech (MBI), will identify qualified private firms willing to design, build, own, operate, manage, and maintain high-speed broadband internet networks in the 40 Massachusetts towns currently unserved by broadband.

Agreement Reached To Extend Broadband Coverage In Nine 'Partially Served' Western Massachusetts Towns

WESTBOROUGH – The Massachusetts Broadband Institute at MassTech (MBI) and Comcast have reached an agreement that will extend broadband access in nine municipalities in Western and North Central Massachusetts, a project which is estimated to deliver broadband connectivity to 1,089 new residences and businesses, and will bring the overall coverage level in each town to 96% or above. The grant will provide up to $4 million in state funds to reimburse partial project costs for Comcast, which has existing networks in each of the towns, to construct broadband internet extensions to additional homes and businesses.

Commonwealth, Charter Finalize Agreement to Deliver Broadband to Hinsdale, Lanesborough, West Stockbridge

WESTBOROUGH – The Baker-Polito Administration announced today a $1.6 million grant to Charter Communications to upgrade and extend broadband access in the unserved communities of Hinsdale, Lanesborough, and West Stockbridge. As of today, Charter launches Spectrum Internet service to existing customers in these three communities. The Commonwealth grant supports this upgrade of Charter’s existing TV-only cable network to an all-digital network capable of delivering digital television and broadband to roughly 80-90 percent of existing households and businesses in the three communities. The Commonwealth grant will also support the extension of broadband and digital television service to an estimated 440 households in Hinsdale, Lanesborough, and West Stockbridge that are currently without any broadband or cable television service.
