Broadband Mapping:
- Data verification and submission, web site development, and statewide availability mapping.
- Comprehensive datasets of broadband availability, middlemile interconnection points, and community anchor institutions were submitted to the NTIA, accompanied by metadata and a methodology whitepaper.
- The datasets were used to develop wireline and wireless broadband availability maps that were posted on the MBI web site and will be displayed on the interactive map available in the next quarter.
- A drive study pilot was performed, in collaboration with Fitchburg State University, to verify coverage in 22 towns.
- Map templates were developed, in collaboration with Regional Planning Agencies (RPAs), for a pilot project to harness local knowledge to verify cable and DSL availability in Franklin and Montachusett regions.
Broadband Planning:
- In collaboration with WesternMA Connect (WMAC) and RPAs, planning, outreach and database activities were performed to support deployment of broadband in western and central Massachusetts.
- RPA staff continues to review telecom bylaws and develop educational materials to assist municipalities and has started to develop databases on route conditions and existing wireless and wireline facilities to support last mile deployment.
- WMAC and the RPAs continue to assist with outreach efforts serving as a liaison with communities in their regions, preparing for last-mile provider organization efforts and maintaining a contact database.
Veterans' Portal:
- A kick-off event was held for the Veterans' Portal project in collaboration with Lieutenant Governor Tim Murray, the National Guard, and the Department of Veterans' Services.
- The MBI issued a procurement for a facilitator to conduct research, complete a needs assessment and develop requirements for use in an RFP for a web developer.
General:
- The MBI has been developing a detailed baseline plan including schedule, budget and scope for the supplemental projects awarded in September.
