DoD Patriot Award Recognizes Employers for Extraordinary Support of Employees Serving in the National Guard and Reserve
BOSTON – The Massachusetts Broadband Institute at the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative has been awarded the Patriot Award by Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), an agency of the federal Department of Defense. The Patriot Award recognizes employers who provide exceptional support to their Guard and Reserve employees.
Judy Dumont, Director of the Massachusetts Broadband Institute at MassTech (MBI), was recognized for extraordinary support of her employee Kyle Toto, a Non-Commission Officer with the United States Army Reserve who has been deployed to Africa and Afghanistan. Toto has been awarded the Combat Action Badge and the Purple Heart.
Toto is the Community Manager for the MBI, charged with development, maintenance and promotion of the innovative resource www.MassVetsAdvisor.org. He works in partnership with the Commonwealth’s Department of Veterans’ Services to help Massachusetts veterans and military families access the online tool to attain the benefits and programs they deserve.
“Kyle’s efforts have been exemplary and we’re delighted by this honor,” said Massachusetts Technology Collaborative CEO Pamela Goldberg. “Ten percent of our staff at MassTech are Veterans, Guard, or Reserve, and we’ve found that hiring, and supporting, these Veteran, Guard and Reserve employees is a win for all involved.”
"Congratulations to Judy and MBI," said Department of Veterans' Services Secretary Coleman Nee. "Massachusetts leads the nation in Veterans benefits and services because of the great work of organizations like MBI. Not only are they supporting citizen soldiers in the workplace, they are stepping to the plate and providing critical resources like MassVetsAdvisor that assist our Veterans and their families on a daily basis."
“The Patriot Award was created by ESGR to publicly recognize individuals who provide outstanding patriotic support and cooperation to their employees, who like the citizen warriors before them, have answered their nation’s call to serve. Judy and the MBI was nominated for being highly supportive of the Army Reserve by Kyle Toto, an employee of MBI who is also an Army Reservist and Afghanistan Veteran. Supportive supervisors are critical to maintaining the strength and readiness of the nation’s National Guard and Reserve units,” said Thomas Boyle, Massachusetts Chair for ESGR.
“Every day in his work with MassVetsAdvisor, Kyle demonstrates how the tenacity and diligence of Veterans can complete a mission in the civilian workplace,” said Judy Dumont. “We’re so grateful to ESGR for this recognition, as we’re also grateful to Kyle and all our Veteran colleagues for their service.”
“It is critically important to ensure our servicemembers get the support they need, and the tools they require to succeed in their civilian lives and in their jobs,” said Senator Stephen M. Brewer (D-Barre). “I am proud to say that Massachusetts is a leader in the services they provide to our men and women who serve our country. The work of the Massachusetts Broadband Institute is a fine example of this and I applaud their work and their support of Kyle.”
