SBI Q4-2013 Summary of Activities

October 1 - December 31, 2013

Broadband Mapping:
  • Updated state wireline and wireless availability maps, MBI Broadband Provider Portal maps and the online Massachusetts Broadband Map.
  • Updated and corrected cable and DSL service area boundaries and maps by town. 
  • Analyzed broadband service availability information to support last mile planning and adoption studies.
  • Reviewed and made corrections to the Community Anchor Institution dataset. 
  • Made modifications to the address data model and enhancements to the address maintenance application based on focus group feedback.
  • Drafted a scope of work for broadband adoption data analysis.
Broadband Planning: 
  • Project completed in 3rd Quarter of 2013.
Veterans' Web Portal: 
  • Added 4 new programs and benefits for a total of 431. The site had over 9,300 unique visitors this quarter, 74% new users.
  • Launched a cable access television show on Westborough TV.
  • Continued discussions with the Veterans Administration and Department of Labor to assess the possibility of a regional expansion of the website.
  • Held 4 Mass VetsAdvisor trainings, including two at the Boston Public Library, and showcased the website at 17 additional Veterans' and regional events.
  • MBI's Community Manager became a member of Governor's Advisory Board for Veterans' Services.
Community Development Corporation (CDC) Grants:
  • All four CDCs are working with the small businesses grant recipients to implement their projects, including hardware and software purchases, website development and technical training. 
  • A total of 45 businesses have been awarded $330,316 in technical assistance. 
  • Pittsfield CDC awarded 2 additional businesses.
  • Dorchester Bay CDC awarded an additional $22,000 to 5 of the participating businesses. 
  • New Bedford CDC is working with Spanish speaking businesses to provide computer training.
  • Quaboag Valley CDC is compiling stories of program impacts.
