$5 Million in New Grant Funding to Expand Digital Equity

On Friday, September 29th, Mayor Michelle Wu announced that the City of Boston has been awarded three grants totaling over $5 million from the Massachusetts Broadband Institute (MBI) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to boost digital equity efforts within the City.

Massachusetts Broadband Institute Announces Several More Participants in Municipal Digital Equity Planning Program

WESTBOROUGH, MA – The Massachusetts Broadband Institute (MBI) at MassTech has announced the second group of municipalities that will benefit from the Commonwealth’s Municipal Digital Equity Planning Program, which provides strategic consultation to cities and towns to help them identify barriers to internet access, boost direct community engagement, and execute digital equity plans to close the digital divide. The program will fund technical assistance for 27 municipalities that will help uncover the best ways to leverage existing and potential future resources, build digital skills, and engage residents in order to expand internet access, affordability, and adoption in each community.

Statewide Series of Listening Sessions on Internet Availability & Digital Equity Launches

The MBI is kicking off a statewide ‘Internet for All’ listening tour to gather input from Massachusetts residents about ways to address digital equity and to identify barriers to internet access. The first regional listening session in the series will be hosted at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro South in Brockton on September 7, 2023, from 5-7 p.m.

Massachusetts Celebrates $147 million in New Federal Broadband Funding

BOSTON — During an event at the White House today, President Biden, U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, and federal telecommunication leaders announced that Massachusetts will receive $147 million from the national Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) program overseen by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA). The program will use $42 billion in federal funds to expand high-speed internet nationwide, including in Massachusetts and the other 49 states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, and other federal territories. Massachusetts Director of Federal Funds & Infrastructure Quentin Palfrey and Director of the Massachusetts Broadband Institute at MassTech Michael Baldino attended the White House event.

Massachusetts Broadband & Digital Equity Summit Brings State & National Leaders to Worcester’s Union Station

WORCESTER – Over 250 community, business, and nonprofit leaders assembled at Worcester’s Union Station on Tuesday, June 13th, for Internet for All: Massachusetts Broadband & Digital Equity Summit, an event organized by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and the Massachusetts Broadband Institute (MBI). The event included talks and panels featuring community executives, government officials, labor representatives, industry speakers, and broadband and digital equity experts who spoke about best practices to deliver affordable, reliable high-speed internet access to citizens across Massachusetts.

Massachusetts Broadband Institute, Comcast Partner with Lead For America’s American Connection Corps to Expand Broadband Adoption

BOSTON – June 1, 2023 – The Massachusetts Broadband Institute at MassTech (MBI) and Comcast announced today a new broadband adoption partnership with, Lead For America, a national 501©(3) nonprofit organization, to bring its American Connection Corps (ACC) program, nation’s premier AmeriCorps service experience, to the Commonwealth in Fall 2023. With support from MBI and Comcast, 15 ACC Members will be recruited for full-time, year-long fellowships to serve as Massachusetts-based, “boots-on-the-ground” support at local host site organizations to help with expanding broadband awareness and digital adoption across the Commonwealth. Massachusetts communities to benefit from this program include: Boston, Chelsea, Haverhill, Holyoke, Leominster, Lowell, Pittsfield, Quincy, Revere, Springfield and Taunton.

Mass. Broadband Institute Announces Municipal Digital Equity Planning Program Participants

WESTBOROUGH, MASS. – Today, the Massachusetts Broadband Institute at MassTech (MBI) announced the first group of 35 municipalities supported by the Commonwealth’s Municipal Digital Equity Planning Program, a statewide effort to guide municipal decision-making and investments that will increase access, adoption, and usage of the internet, in particular for populations most impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The municipalities in the program receive expert consultation on the determining factors of digital access, including internet availability and affordability, access to connected devices, and digital skills training.

Massachusetts Awards $14 Million to Address Digital Divide

Springfield, Mass. – Leaders from the Commonwealth’s Executive Office of Economic Development and the Massachusetts Broadband Institute (MBI) at MassTech announced $14 million in new grants from the state’s Digital Equity Partnerships Program to address statewide digital equity gaps during an event today at The Tech Foundry in Springfield. The three grants were announced by Economic Development Secretary Yvonne Hao, who highlighted the selected projects from Tech Goes Home, which will receive $4.5 million,; Vinfen, on behalf of the Human Services Alliance for Digital Equity, which will receive $4.3 million; and Baystate Health, on behalf of the Western MA Alliance for Digital Equity, which will receive $5.1 million.

Biden-Harris Administration Awards More Than $6 Million to Massachusetts in ‘Internet for All’ Planning Grants

WASHINGTON – The Department of Commerce’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) announced that Massachusetts received its first “Internet for All” grants for deploying high-speed Internet networks and developing digital skills training programs under the Biden-Harris Administration’s Internet for All initiative. Massachusetts is receiving $6,003,760.60 in funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, signed by President Biden, to plan for the deployment and adoption of affordable, equitable, and reliable high-speed Internet service throughout the state.

Baker-Polito Administration Celebrates Broadband Expansion Progress

December 02, 2022

Ashfield — State officials celebrated the impacts of the Last Mile infrastructure program, which has delivered high-speed internet access to approximately 26,000 premises across 53 towns in north-central and western Massachusetts, and discussed programs that will leverage over $350 million in anticipated state and federal funding to address digital equity and broadband infrastructure gaps that exist statewide.
